Softball: Hart Tournament Tests Burbank, Burroughs

The Burroughs High School varsity softball team defeated Oxnard 5-2 in a Hart Tournament game on Feb. 17 as senior Emerson Coblentz pitched a complete game with six strikeouts, allowing just two earned runs on three hits and no walks.

Sophomore Karlee Earl blasted a two-run home run and a walk, senior Skylar Vanole went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run, and senior Phoebe Spangler went 2-for-3 with two runs. Junior Alyssa Morales recorded a double, a run and a walk, while senior Eliza Torres finished with a base hit. Freshman Sophie Rangsiyawong tallied an RBI, senior Alyssa Rosales walked twice and freshman Chloe Zavala stole a base.

The Bears suffered a 3-2 loss against El Camino Real High of Woodland Hills in a tournament game on Feb. 17. Freshman Valentina Reyes struck out three batters across six innings in the circle.

Spangler contributed a solo home run and a walk, while Vanole recorded a double and a run. Morales produced a hit and an RBI, Rosales and Torres tallied a base hit, and Rangsiyawong walked once.

Burroughs shut out visiting Mark Keppel High of Alhambra 10-0 in a nonleague game on Feb. 15.

Coblentz pitched five scoreless innings with two hits, one strikeout and no walks, while Reyes pitched a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts.

Junior Chloe Centeno went 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs and one RBI, while senior Gizelle Rangsiyawong went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, two runs and a walk. Spangler went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, a stolen base and a run, while Sophie Rangsiyawong went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Karisma Mendez recorded a hit, two RBIs and a run, Earl finished with a hit and a run, and Zavala and Vanole each tallied a base hit. Morales walked four times, scored twice and stole a pair of bases, while Rosales had an RBI.

The Bears (3-1 overall) will visit Etiwanda for a nonleague game on Feb. 29 at 3:15 p.m. before hosting Harvard-Westlake High of Studio City on March 5.

BURBANK

The Bulldogs lost to Canyon High of Santa Clarita 6-3 in a Hart Tournament game on Feb. 17 as senior Belinda Lujano went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs and an RBI.

Junior Samantha Cafferty, who went 2-for-3 and scored a run, pitched a complete game with three strikeouts, allowing six runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks. Junior Maddison Kellogg tallied a base hit, while senior Eliza Bowren was credited with an RBI.

Burbank suffered a 7-2 extra-inning loss against Royal High of Simi Valley in a tournament game on Feb. 17. Kellogg racked up 19 strikeouts across 11 innings in the circle, allowing one unearned run on four hits and no walks. Lujano made an impact at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a solo home run. Bowren recorded a hit and a walk, freshman Chloe Updike tallied a base hit, and senior Kara Valencia and junior Charley Barnett each walked once.

The Bulldogs picked up a 4-2 nonleague victory over visiting Village Christian High of Sun Valley on Feb. 15.

Kellogg struck out nine batters over five innings to earn the win, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks. Sophomore Kayla Orozco, who had a hit, an RBI, a run and a walk at the plate, pitched two innings of relief with three strikeouts. Senior Abigail Kimmer and Valencia each finished with a hit, an RBI, a run and a walk, Bowren produced a double, a run and a walk, and Lujano had a base hit.

Burbank (2-2) will host Royal High of Simi Valley for a nonleague game on Feb. 26 before hosting Canyon High Canyon Country on Feb. 29.
