Bears Overwhelm Hoover in League Matchup

The Burroughs High School varsity girls’ basketball team lost to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 47-36 in the opening round of John Burroughs Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27.

Freshman Claire Hackney scored 10 points, while junior Mariam Fahs finished with nine points and five rebounds. Sophomore Anna Phillips chipped in nine points, while senior Ashley Martin and sophomore Valentina Morales each had nine rebounds.

The Bears defeated Holy Martyrs Armenian High of Encino 49-33 in a La Salle College Preparatory Winter Classic game on Dec. 22.

Sophomore Elizabeth Amoroso racked up 12 points, nine assists, eight steals and seven rebounds, while Hackney poured in 18 points, four rebounds and one steal. Morales finished with six points, five rebounds, one block, one steal and one assist, while Martin contributed six points, two rebounds, two steals, two assists and one block. Fahs chipped in four points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal, while freshman Jessica Mena registered four rebounds, three points, two assists and one steal. Senior Mia Paz tallied four rebounds and one block, while Phillips had three rebounds, one block and one assist.

Burroughs routed host Hoover High in Glendale 50-2 in a Pacific League game on Dec. 21.

Amoroso finished with 12 points, five steals, five assists and two rebounds, Morales contributed eight points, five rebounds, three blocks, two steals and one assist, and freshman Polina Gorgeiz tallied eight points, three rebounds and one block. Hackney chipped in five points and five steals, while Fahs produced five rebounds, four points, three assists, two steals and one block. Martin recorded four points, four rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist, while Mena registered four points, two steals and one rebound. Paz notched two points, two steals, one assist and one rebound, sophomore Alyssa Pracha had three steals, two points and one rebound, and junior Ella Anderson had two rebounds and one point. Phillips had three rebounds, two assists and one block, while sophomore Gabriella Buendia had one steal.

The Bears (12-2 overall, 4-1 in league) will resume league play at Muir High in Pasadena on Jan. 4 at 5:15 p.m. before traveling to Glendale on Jan. 9.

BURBANK

The Bulldogs lost at Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies 43-39 in a nonleague game on Dec. 26. Burbank also suffered a 51-30 Pacific League loss at Crescenta Valley High in La Crescenta on Dec. 21. Individual statistics were not reported to the Burbank Leader.

The Bulldogs (3-11, 1-4) will resume league play by hosting Hoover High of Glendale on Jan. 4 at 5:15 p.m. before hosting Muir High of Pasadena on Jan. 9.
