Softball: Bears Avenge Loss to Bulldogs in League Finale

The Burroughs and Burbank high school varsity softball teams clashed for a second time this season in the inaugural Pacific League Tournament.

The visiting Bears avenged their previous loss to the Bulldogs with a 10-7 victory, securing third place in the Pacific League Tournament while leaving Burbank in fourth.

JBHS senior Phoebe Spangler led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles, four RBIs, two runs and two walks. In the circle for the Bears (21-6 overall, 6-1 in league), freshman Valentina Reyes pitched a complete game with two strikeouts. Junior Chloe Centeno went 2-for-5 with a double and five RBIs, while sophomore Karlee Earl went 3-for-4 with four runs and a walk. Freshman Alissa Cortez recorded a hit and a stolen base, while freshman Sophie Rangsiyawong tallied two walks, two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Karisma Mendez walked twice, junior Alyssa Morales walked once, scored a run and stole a base, and freshman Chloe Zavala walked once and stole a base.

Meanwhile for Burbank (12-12, 5-2), junior Maddison Kellogg, who had a double and two RBIs at the plate, pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts. Senior Kara Valencia went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run and a walk, while senior Belinda Lujano went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs and a stolen base. Junior Samantha Cafferty went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while junior Olivia Orozco went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Eliza Bowren walked twice, while junior Charley Barnett scored a run.

The CIF Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on April 27 at 10 a.m. while postseason action starts next week.

BURROUGHS

The Bears lost at Arcadia 13-2 in their Pacific League Tournament opener on April 22.

Senior Emerson Coblentz pitched 3 1/3 innings with five strikeouts, while Reyes pitched 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Centeno went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Morales recorded three walks, two stolen bases and a run. Spangler walked twice, senior Skylar Vanole walked once and scored a run, and Earl walked once.

Burroughs defeated host Dos Pueblos 6-2 in a nonleague game on April 20 as Coblentz pitched a complete game with four strikeouts.

Senior Gizelle Rangsiyawong went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, while Spangler went 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk. Centeno registered a hit, two runs and an RBI, Sophie Rangsiyawong produced a hit and an RBI, and Morales was credited with a hit and a run.

Burroughs overwhelmed host Santa Clara with an 11-1 nonleague victory on April 20.

Vanole went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and a run, while Sophie Rangsiyawong went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs. Spangler finished with a double, two runs, an RBI and a walk, while Centeno contributed a hit and two runs. Earl tallied a double, while senior Alyssa Rosales and Morales each recorded a hit and an RBI. Gizelle Rangsiyawong scored twice and walked once, senior Lily Essakhanian scored once, and Zavala was credited with an RBI.

BURBANK

Burbank High freshman Chloe Updike had a base hit to help the Bulldogs beat Arcadia in a April 20 Pacific League Tournament game.

The Bulldogs suffered a 10-0 loss against visiting Crescenta Valley High of La Crescenta in a Pacific League Tournament game on April 22.

Kellogg pitched 3 1/3 innings with five strikeouts, while Cafferty pitched 1 1/3 innings with a strikeout. Valencia and Barnett each tallied a base hit, while Bowren walked once.

Burbank secured a narrow 1-0 victory at Arcadia in their tournament opener on April 20.

Kellogg pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, while Cafferty pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Lujano recorded a triple, while Valencia finished with a double. Barnett tallied a hit and a run, Bowren produced a hit and a walk, and freshman Chloe Updike had a base hit.
