Boys’ Tennis: Woods, Burbank Duo Earn Top Tournament Finishes

 Representatives of the Burroughs and Burbank high school varsity boys’ tennis teams competed in the Pacific League Tournament on April 22 and 23.

Burroughs singles player Bernard Woods served as the No. 3 seed and defeated Burbank’s Raphael Lazaryev, the No. 4 seed, 8-2, in a third-place match.

Woods advanced to the consolation match after losing to Arcadia’s No. 2 seed, 4-6, 0-6. He defeated Hoover’s No. 6 seed in the second round in two sets with identical 6-2 scores. Woods defeated Hoover’s No. 14 seed, 6-0, 6-3, in the first round.

Lazaryev lost to Crescenta Valley High School’s No. 1 seed in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 3-10. He posted a second-round sweep against Crescenta Valley High’s No. 12 seed with scores of 6-2 and 6-3, following a win over Arcadia’s No. 13 seed in two sets with identical 6-1 scores in the first round.

Burroughs’ Jaden Chapman, the No. 9 seed, lost to Crescenta Valley High’s No. 1 seed in the second round, 6-1, 6-0, but defeated Pasadena’s No. 8 seed in the opening round with scores of 6-3 and 7-6 (7-4).

Burbank’s fifth-seeded Dominic Aleman and No. 15-seeded David Petrosyan, as well as Burroughs’ No. 7-seeded Zachary Barry, were each eliminated in the opening round.

In doubles play, Burbank’s No. 3-seeded doubles team of Adonis Basco and David Kerimyan finished fourth after losing to Arcadia’s eighth-seeded team, 8-5. The tandem advanced to the consolation match after suffering a two-set loss to Arcadia’s No. 2-seeded team, 4-6, 5-7. Basco and Kerimyan picked up a two-set second-round victory over Crescenta Valley High’s No. 6-seeded team, 7-6, 6-2, after sweeping Burroughs’s No. 14-seeded team of Miles Howell and James Stell with a pair of identical 6-1 scores in the opening round.

Burbank’s seventh-seeded team of Desmond McNeill and Harutyun Keklikyan lost to Arcadia’s No. 2-seeded team, 2-6, 2-6, in the second round after sweeping Burroughs’ No. 10-seeded tandem of Bevan Maxwell and Joshua Liwag, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round.

Burbank’s ninth-seeded team of Vamsi Chintha and Blake Lewis, and Burroughs’ No. 5-seeded team of Paul Vu and Iulian Lundberg each lost in the opening round.

BULLDOGS 11, BEARS 7

The Burbank and Burroughs high school varsity boys’ tennis teams ended the regular season with their intracity rivalry match on April 17. The Bulldogs secured an 11-7 victory over the visiting Bulldogs in the Pacific League contest.

In singles play, Burbank’s No. 1 Lazaryev (6-2, 7-5) and No. 2 Petrosyan (6-2, 6-3) each won a pair of sets, while No. 3 Aleman added a 6-2 victory. Burroughs’ No. 1 Woods swept with scores of 6-2, 6-4 and 6-4, while No. 2 Barry added a 6-2 victory.

In doubles play, Burbank’s No. 3 team of McNeill and Basco swept with scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4. The No. 2 tandem of Keklikyan and Kerimyan won a pair of sets with scores of 6-3 and 7-5, while the No. 1 duo of Chintha and Lewis added a 6-0 victory. Meanwhile for Burroughs, the No. 3 team of Vu and Lundberg won a pair of sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-3, while the No. 1 tandem of Maxwell and Liwag added a narrow 7-6 (7-4) victory.
