Baseball: Rivals Settle Showdown in Extra Innings

The Burroughs and Burbank high school varsity baseball teams squared off for the first of two Pacific League matchups on April 23. The Bears walked away with a victory, defeating the host Bulldogs in extra innings 10-6.

Pitching was crucial for Burroughs, as senior Elvis Moreno tossed seven innings with six strikeouts. Junior Kenny Montgomery and sophomore Jack Guest each pitched one inning.

Offensively, junior Kyle Smith went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two RBIs and a run, while senior Nate Chapman went 2-for-3 with two runs and two walks. Freshman Elliot Ross finished with a hit, two runs, an RBI, a stolen base and a walk, senior Dylan Conahan contributed a hit, two stolen bases, an RBI and a run, and sophomore Devin Whittekiend recorded a hit and four RBIs. Senior Nickolas Fritz produced a hit, two runs and an RBI, while senior Brian Martinez registered a hit, a run and a stolen base. Senior Chris Perez walked twice and scored a run, while senior Willan Armes was credited with an RBI.

Burbank’s Robert Snyder, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base at the plate, pitched 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts, while teammate Miklo Reynoso pitched 2 2/3 innings with a strikeout. Ryan Sebastian produced a hit, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base, while Thomas Angel finished with a hit, a run and a walk. Michael Bui recorded a hit and a run, while Bryant Johnson tallied a base hit. Colby Bette walked twice and scored a run, Jake Reyes was credited with an RBI, and Adrian Vasquez scored a run.

Burroughs (19-5 overall, 11-2 in league) host Burbank (7-13, 6-7) for its regular-season finale on April 26; the league game ended after the Leader’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. The CIF Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on April 29 at 10 a.m.

BURROUGHS

The Bears lost at Simi Valley 7-4 in a nonleague game on April 20.

Perez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, senior Connor Nestor went 2-for-3 with a run, and senior Tommy Vournas went 2-for-3. Armes recorded a hit and two RBIs, Martinez had a hit and a run, and junior Andrew Cosio tallied a hit. Senior Nate Cisneros pitched three innings, sophomore Ryan Walsh pitched one inning with one strikeout and Kyle Smith pitched one scoreless inning.

Burroughs suffered an 8-3 Pacific League loss at Arcadia on April 19.

Martinez went 2-for-3 with a double, sophomore Jack Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Ross went 2-for-3 with a walk. Chapman finished with a hit, three RBIs and a stolen base, Perez registered a base hit, and sophomore Logan Drossin scored a run. Whittekiend pitched 3 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts, Moreno pitched one inning with a pair of strikeouts and Guest pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

BURBANK

Burbank High School’s Jake Reyes was credited with an RBI during a Pacific League game against Burroughs High on April 23.

The Bulldogs were shut out at Crescenta Valley High in La Crescenta 6-0 in a Pacific League game on April 19 as Bette pitched six innings with four strikeouts.

Bui recorded a hit and a walk, Snyder, Johnson and Vasquez each tallied a base hit, and Jeremy Lee walked once.
