Bulldogs Fend Off Fillmore for First Win

The Burbank High School varsity football team earned its first victory of the season, narrowly defeating Fillmore 42-41 in a nonleague matchup on Sept. 8.

Junior quarterback Daniel Zacariaz completed 14 of 26 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns. Junior Joseph Caballero showcased his versatility with three catches for 69 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 80 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

Junior Ezekiel Alvarez contributed with four catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. Senior Sean Garrett added four receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown. Junior Max Kelley made two catches for 10 yards, delivering both a touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Junior Jacob Mendieta had 18 carries for 54 yards while senior Jake Reyes made a 6-yard catch. Senior Chris Aguirre went 3-for-3 in PAT attempts while senior Brian Butchko scored one extra point.

Senior Marcus Ojeil led the team with nine tackles, while senior Arthur Kazanchian recorded six tackles. Senior Brandon Elizalde, senior Levon Bakmazian and junior Landon Williams each tallied four tackles, while seniors Eduardo Martinez and Diego Ruacho each registered three tackles. Junior Aidan Miller contributed two tackles and an interception, junior Jack Rogerson registered two tackles, and senior Dylan Muriano, junior Justin Arteaga and sophomore Adrian Albarran each had one tackle.

The Bulldogs (1-3 overall) hosted St. Genevieve on Sept. 15; the nonleague game ended after the Burbank Leader’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. Burbank will open Pacific-Upper League play at Arcadia on Sept. 29 before visiting Crescenta Valley High in La Crescenta on Oct. 6.
