Bulldogs Blank Rival Bears in Season Finale

The Burbank High School varsity baseball team blanked visiting Burroughs, 2-0, in its regular-season finale last Friday.

Bulldogs pitcher Jimmy Cafferty struck out 11 batters over 6.1 scoreless innings with allowing only three hits.

Julian Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Burbank, Miklo Reynoso recorded a hit and a run, and Danny Betancourt and Ryan Sebastion each had a base hit. Dylan Wierbilis scored once and stole a base, Adan De Paz produced an RBI and Joe Maslyk walked once.

Burroughs’ Nate Chapman went 2-for-2 with two steals and a walk, Sebastian Zamora recorded a double. Bryan Martinez tallied a hit while Roberto Castenada walked once.

Pitcher Lucas Beltran finished with three strikeouts over four scoreless innings with one hit and one walk.

The Bulldogs, who finished fifth in the Pacific League with a 7-7 record (12-9 overall), opened the CIF-Southern Section Division IV playoffs at Elsinore High in Wildomar yesterday; the game ended after the Burbank Leader’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. If victorious, Burbank would advance to the second round and meet either El Rancho High of Pico Rivera (17-6) or Chino (15-7) on Tuesday, May 9.

BURROUGHS

The Bears were edged at Lakewood, 2-1, in an extra inning CIF-Southern Section Division II wildcard game on Wednesday. Individual statistics were not reported to the Burbank Leader by the Burroughs coaching staff.

The Bears finished the season third in the Pacific League with an 8-6 record (12-12 overall).
