Boys’ Tennis: Bulldogs Knock Off West Ranch to Open CIF

The Burbank High School varsity boys’ tennis team secured a narrow 10-8 victory at West Ranch High in Valencia in its CIF Southern Section Division II opener on May 1.

In singles play, No. 1 Raphael Lazaryev won a pair of sets with scores of 6-1 and 7-5. No. 2 David Kerimyan picked up a pair of wins with scores of 6-2 and 6-4, while No. 3 Dominic Aleman also won a pair of sets with scores of 6-1 and 7-5.

The No. 3 doubles team of James Basco and Desmond McNeill swept with scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4, while the No. 2 tandem of Harutyun Keklikyan and David Petrosyan added a 6-3 victory.

The Bulldogs hosted Foothill High of Santa Ana on May 3; the CIF second-round match ended after the Leader’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. If victorious, Burbank (11-4 overall) would advance to the quarterfinals against Troy High of Fullerton (14-2) or El Dorado High of Placentia (17-5) on May 6.

BURROUGHS

The Bears lost at Murrieta Valley High 16-2 in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs on May 1. The No. 1 doubles team of Paul Vu and Aditya Kiran won both sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-4.

JBHS picked up a 13-5 CIF wildcard round victory at Campbell Hall High in North Hollywood on April 30.

In singles play, No. 1 Bernard Woods swept with scores of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-5, while No. 2 Zachary Barry (6-0, 6-1) and No. 3 Jaden Chapman (6-1, 7-6) each won a pair of sets.

The No. 1 doubles team of Vu and Kiran won a pair of sets with scores of 6-3 and 7-6. Vu alternated with James Stell, and the new duo added a 6-4 victory to complete the sweep. The No. 2 tandem of Bevan Maxwell and Joshua Liwag won a pair of sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-3, while Miles Howell and Ari Pathak added a 6-2 victory.

Burroughs finished the campaign fourth in the Pacific League with a 7-4-1 record (8-6-2 overall).
