Bulldogs Sink Temple City, Win Fifth Straight

The Burbank High School varsity boys’ water polo team picked up its fifth consecutive victory after beating host Temple City 11-6 in a nonleague game on Sept. 12 as junior Christian Lazaryan racked up 10 saves, three steals and one assist.

Senior Andranik Bilbulyan finished with three assists, two goals and one steal, junior Greg Baboudian tallied two goals, two assists and two steals, and junior Daniel Agazaryan produced two goals and two steals. Senior Hayk Atanasyan and junior Avet Avetisyan each recorded two goals and one steal, while sophomore Jack Babelyon collected five steals, one goal and one assist. Senior Arthur Saryan was credited with one assist, while freshman Avvo Ilangesyan had one steal.

The Bulldogs recently won the Downey Tournament after edging Downey 9-8 in the championship game on Sept. 9 as senior Alec Chalkdzhyan finished with 15 saves.

Bilbulyan recorded three goals, two steals and one assist, while Avetisyan scored two goals with one steal. Babelyon tallied two steals, one goal and one assist, Ilangesyan contributed one goal, one assist and one steal, and Atanasyan produced one goal and one assist. Sophomore Leo Khachaturian scored once while senior Alex Kobalyan registered two steals and one assist. Agazaryan collected one assist and one steal while Saryan had one steal.

Burbank opened the second day of tournament play with a convincing 16-4 victory over Mission Viejo.

Avetisyan racked up six goals, while Bilbulyan amassed five goals, three assists and one steal. Junior Alex Vardanyan and Khachaturian each scored two goals, Atanasyan produced two assists, one goal and one steal, and Babelyon finished with two steals, one goal and one assist. Kobalyan tallied five assists and one steal, while Ilangesyan collected one assist and one steal. Agazaryan contributed two steals, while Baboudian and Saryan each had one assist. Chalkdzhyan made eight saves, senior Alexander Mnatsakanyan collected three saves and one steal, and Lazaryan notched two saves and one steal.

The Bulldogs posted a 16-6 tournament victory over St. John Bosco High of Bellflower to conclude the first day of tournament play on Sept. 8.

Chalkdzhyan contributed 15 saves, four assists and one steal, while Bilbulyan finished with four goals, one steal and one assist. Agazaryan registered three goals, two assists and two steals, Avetisyan tallied three goals, one assist and one steal, and Babelyon produced two goals, one assist and one steal. Atanasyan recorded three steals and one goal, while Khachaturian notched two steals and one goal. Saryan and Ilangesyan each scored one goal, while Kobalyan had two assists.

Burbank routed Chaffey High of Ontario 24-1 in its tournament opener. Khachaturian racked up six goals, two assists and one steal, while Vardanyan finished with four goals, two steals and one assist.

Babelyon produced two goals, two assists and two steals, Ilangesyan tallied two goals, two steals and one assist, and Agazaryan recorded two goals, one assist and one steal. Senior Michael Misakyan and Avetisyan each scored three goals while Baboudian registered four steals, one goal and one assist. Kobalyan produced two assists, two steals and one goal, Lazaryan was credited with five assists and one steal, and Mnatsakanyan contributed three assists and one save. Saryan collected two assists and two steals, Bilbulyan notched two assists and Atanasyan had one steal.

The Bulldogs narrowly lost a nonleague game at Camarillo 10-9 on Sept. 7. Agazaryan finished with three goals, two assists and one steal while Avetisyan scored three goals.

Chalkdzhyan collected seven saves and two steals, while Atanasyan recorded three assists and three steals. Bilbulyan tallied two steals, one goal and one assist while, Misakyan and Saryan each had one goal. Babelyon registered one steal, while Ilangesyan was credited with one assist.

Burbank (6-1 overall) will finish competing in the Chino Hills Tournament on Sept. 16 before visiting Buena High in Ventura for a nonleague game on Sept. 21 at 3:15 p.m. The Bulldogs will then open Pacific League play at Hoover High in Glendale on Sept. 26.

BURROUGHS

Burroughs High School goalie Atticus Mata tallied eight saves during a Malibu Tournament game against Thousand Oaks last week.

The Bears competed in the Malibu Tournament on Sept. 8 and Sept. 9, and finished with a 1-3 record.

JBHS was edged by Thousand Oaks 9-8 in its tournament opener on Sept. 8.

lan Duffield finished with five goals and two assists, Atticus Mata racked up eight saves, six steals and one assist, and Harrison Siegel collected six steals, two assists and one goal. Aiden Means contributed one goal and one assist, Caleb DuFour scored one goal with one steal, and Nicola Nasev had two steals.

The Bears later suffered losses against Royal High of Simi Valley, 11-10, and Malibu, 9-7, but posted a dominant 16-4 victory over Oxnard. Individual statistics were not reported to the Burbank Leader by the Burroughs coaching staff.

JBHS (4-5 overall) will finish competing in the Chino Hills tournament on Sept. 16 before hosting South Pasadena on Sept. 19. The Bears will open Pacific League action the following week at Arcadia on Sept. 26.
