Bears in Tournament; Bulldogs Win Opener

The Burroughs High School varsity boys’ water polo team recently opened the regular season by competing in the Pasadena Poly Invitational last weekend.
JBHS secured a fifth-place finish on the final day of the tournament after dominating La Cañada, 15-4, on Saturday. Harrison Zekowski scored a game-high six goals, Ian Duffield and Harrison Siegel each tallied four goals, while Winston Bromhead scored once.
The Bears ended pool play with a 7-1 victory over South Pasadena earlier last Saturday. Siegel led with three goals, all of which came in the second half, while Logan Turla added a pair of goals. Duffield and Dean Yuzna each posted a goal in the first quarter.
Burroughs finished the first day of tournament play by falling to the eventual tournament champion Flintridge Preparatory of La Cañada Flintridge, 15-12, last Friday.
Siegel registered a game-high five goals, and Duffield notched four goals. Meanwhile, Jean Paul Medrano and Zekowski each finished with one goal.
The Bears opened last Friday with an 8-5 loss against La Serna High of Whittier. Duffield led the team with a pair of goals while Yuzna, Turla and Ryan Rolando each had one goal.
JBHS (2-2 overall) will visit Notre Dame High of Sherman Oaks in a nonleague matchup on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m.

BURBANK

The Bulldogs collected a season-opening victory at Downey, 15-13, in a nonleague game last Thursday.
BHS pulled off a comeback victory after finishing the first quarter facing a 6-4 deficit. After knotting the game 8-8 at halftime and 11-11 after the third quarter, Burbank outscored Downey 4-2 down the stretch to secure a late victory.
Junior Andranik Bilbulyan collected three goals, two steals and four assists, senior Zack Gezalyan posted three goals, four steals and one assist, and sophomore Danny Agazaryan notched three goals, two steals and one assist. Senior Arman Hovhanissyan recorded two goals, two steals and five assists, sophomore Eric Avetisyan tallied two goals, three steals and one assist, sophomore Gevorg Choginyan finished with one goal, one steal and one assist and senior Andy Gezalyan scored once. Junior Alec Chalkdzhyan registered two saves and four steals, while junior Hayk Atanasyan produced three steals.
The Bulldogs (1-0 overall) will visit Carpinteria for a nonleague matchup on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The last time these two schools met was in last year’s CIF-SS Division V title game which Burbank lost 12-9.
