Portantino Honors Burbank’s Blast From the Past as Small Business of the Year

First published in the Aug. 27 print issue of the Burbank Leader.

This week, state Sen. Anthony Portantino honored Blast From the Past in Burbank as the Small Business of the Year for the 25th State Senate District.
Store manager Duncan Bradley flew to Sacramento to attend the award ceremony to represent the family-owned business.
“I am excited to honor Blast From the Past as an outstanding small business in the 25th Senate District,” Portantino said.
“It is well-deserved and I am proud to have it in my district. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and their contributions to our state are critical. I especially want to recognize owner Kathy Ross for her years of dedication to the betterment of the small business community through the Magnolia Park Merchants Association. And, as someone who has spent time and shopped at this amazing store I can personally attest to its wonderful classic and nostalgic inventory,” he added.
Established in 2004, Blast from the Past is a comic book, memorabilia and collectibles store.
The main goal for owners Larry and Kathy Ross is to provide a friendly, helping hand and making their customers feel right at home, they said.
Kathy Ross also serves as president of the Magnolia Park Merchants Association, a nonprofit composed of Magnolia Park business owners and community residents who work together to support the business district through fundraising, community events and city outreach.
“All of us at Blast From the Past wish to express our honor for being chosen for this award and our sincerest thanks to senator Portantino,” said Larry and Kathy Ross in a statement. “We would also like to thank all our loyal customers for your continued support and patronage through these difficult times. The fact that we have been able to grow out business at such a time is testament to how powerful your support for us truly must be. We would also like to congratulate all the other honorees for your exceptional work.”
Each year, the California State legislature celebrates small business in conjunction with the California Small Business Association. Small businesses receive special public recognition in Sacramento and are honored for their contributions to the state.
