Harold A Daugherty, Jr., 81 years old, of Burbank, California, died July 11, 2023. He was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 7, 1941.
He held a bachelor’s degree from Occidental College (1963), and a master’s (1968) and a Doctor of Musical Arts (1976) degrees from the University of Southern California. His organ teachers were Clarence Mader and Irene Robertson. His choral studies were with Howard Swan, Charles Hirt and James Vail.
In 1967, he joined the faculty of Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia, where he taught choral music, organ and music history. In 1975, he joined the faculty of Claremont Colleges in California, where he taught the inter-collegiate choirs and music theory at Scripps College.
He was organist and choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Los Angeles from 1968 to 1979, and St. Edmund’s Episcopal Church in San Marino, California, from 1979 to 1991, and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glendale, California, from 1991 to 2001. He was director of music at La Cañada Congregational Church in La Cañada Flintridge, California, from 2001 to 2019.
He was an active member of the American Guild of Organists and served as dean of the Los Angeles chapter twice. He also served in several leadership positions in the AGO Region IX.
In addition to his musical life, he worked for EF Hutton and Shearson Lehman brokerages in Corporate Services National Facilities as a real estate negotiator. He was the owner and recording engineer of Precision Audio Recorders, a location recording service, from 1971 to 1980.
Harold is survived by his only son, Sean, his daughter-in-law, Iliana, and three grandchildren, Xyler, Kaitlyn and Cheyene.
