The Burbank High School varsity boys’ basketball team picked up its third straight victory after edging host Muir High in Pasadena, 69-68, in a Pacific League game on Tuesday.
Senior captain Sattwik Banerjee scored a game-high 30 points while junior Omar Payind poured in 22 points. Senior Steven Harutyunian scored eight points, junior Mike Gutierrez tallied four points, sophomore Kevin Dehbashian finished with three points and senior Dante Shahbazian had two points.
The Bulldogs previously defeated visiting intracity rival Burroughs High in a league game, 81-64. Banerjee racked up a game-high 33 points, nine rebounds, four assists and one block while Payind amassed 32 points, four boards, three assists and one block. Senior Ashot Danielian registered five points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist, Dehbashian posted five points, five boards, four assists and one steal, and Harutyunian tallied four points, 10 rebounds, four assists and one steal. Freshman Evan Baker produced two points and four boards, senior Nathan Figueroa collected one steal, one rebound and one assist, and Gutierrez had four boards and one steal.
Burbank hosted Arcadia in a league contest last night; the game ended after the Burbank Leader’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. The fifth-place Bulldogs (8-12 overall, 4-5 in league) will visit first-place Pasadena for a league rematch on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 5 p.m.
BURROUGHS
The Bears snapped their 10-game losing streak by beating Hoover High in Glendale, 64-59, in a Pacific League game.
Sam Horning racked up 16 points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists, Jagger Topp registered 12 points, four assists, two boards and one steal, and Tyrell Burrell poured in 10 points with seven assists, three rebounds and two steals. Chase Kardosh tallied eight points, five boards, two assists, one block and one steal, Elden Jackson finished with eight points and two rebounds, and Landon Everheart recorded five points, eight boards, three blocks and one steal. Jacob Samontina drained a 3-pointer with one block and one assist while Arthur Gabrieylan scored two points with seven rebounds and two steals. Meanwhile, Thomas Mahoney had one board.
Burroughs lost a South Pasadena Martin Luther King Jr. Day Showdown game against Schurr High of Montebello, 63-54, on Monday as Horning scored 20 points.
The Bears previously lost at Gahr High in Cerritos, 66-47, in a nonleague game last Saturday. Gabrieylan registered 12 points, seven boards, one block and one steal, Samontina finished with 11 points, four rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist, and Burrell poured in 11 points with one steal and one board. Kardosh recorded seven points two steals and two rebounds while Jackson tallied four points, four boards, two assists and one steal. Mahoney had two points and three rebounds, Everheart collected three boards, two blocks, two steals and one assist, and Elijah Orjuela posted a pair of rebounds.
JBHS previously lost a league game at intracity rival Burbank, 81-64, as Kardosh racked up 22 points, two steals and two boards. Burrell registered 12 points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist, Horning tallied 11 points, six boards and one assist, and Topp poured in 10 points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists. Everheart recorded five points, five boards, two blocks, two steals and one assist, Mahoney finished with two points and three rebounds, and Jackson scored two points. Samontina collected two steals, two assists and one board while Gabrieylan had one rebound.
