Bears, Bulldogs Cap Off Year With Tournament Competition

The Burroughs High School varsity girls’ basketball team defeated Shalhevet High of Los Angeles 46-41 in its West Coast Holiday Tournament finale on Dec. 30.

Freshman Claire Hackney registered 14 points, three rebounds and two assists, while junior Mariam Fahs tallied 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Valentina Morales recorded eight points, five rebounds and one steal, while senior Ashley Martin chipped in six points, seven rebounds, four steals, four assists and one block. Sophomore Elizabeth Amoroso finished with six rebounds, five points, three steals and two assists, while freshman Jessica Mena produced two points and one assist.

The Bears secured a 49-29 victory over Trinity Classical Academy of Valencia in a tournament game on Dec. 29.

Fahs poured in 14 points with four rebounds, one steal and one assist, while Amoroso tallied 11 points, nine steals, three rebounds and two assists. Morales contributed eight points, eight rebounds and three steals, Martin recorded eight rebounds, six points, two steals, one block and one assist, and Hackney chipped in six points, six steals and four assists. Mena produced three rebounds, one point and one assist, sophomore Anna Phillips registered one block and one assist, and sophomore Alyssa Pracha collected one rebound.

Burroughs cruised to a 49-16 victory over Santa Monica in a tournament game on Dec. 28 as Hackney poured in 12 points with two steals and two assists.

Fahs tallied six points, four steals and two rebounds, senior Mia Paz finished with six points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal, and Pracha chipped in six points and four rebounds. Phillips recorded five points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist, Morales registered nine rebounds, four points and one assist, and Martin contributed four points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists. Junior Ella Anderson produced three points, one rebound and one assist, while Amoroso notched six steals, two points, two assists and one rebound. Sophomore Gabriella Buendia had one point, one rebound and one assist, while Mena collected five steals, three rebounds and one assist.

The Bears (15-2 overall, 4-1 in league) will visit Glendale for a Pacific League game on Jan. 9 at 6:45 p.m. before hosting Burbank on Jan. 12.

BURBANK

The Bulldogs competed in the Burroughs West Coast Holiday Tournament last week and finished with a 1-3 record.

Burbank suffered losses against Santa Paula, 55-45, Cleveland High of Reseda, 60-23, and Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, 43-39, while posting a 47-24 victory over Golden Valley High of Santa Clarita. Individual statistics were not reported to the Burbank Leader.

The Bulldogs (4-13, 1-4) will host Muir High of Pasadena for a Pacific League game on Jan. 9 at 6:45 p.m. before visiting Burroughs High on Jan. 12.
