Bears Sink Tigers, Bulldogs Impress at Tourney

The Burbank High School varsity boys’ water polo team competed in the Chino Hills Tournament last weekend and finished third with a 3-1 record after beating San Marcos 12-5 in its finale on Sept. 16.

Junior Christian Lazaryan collected three saves and two steals, senior Alec Chalkdzhyan recorded three saves, and senior Alexander Mnatsakanyan produced two saves and one steal. Senior Andranik Bilbulyan finished with three goals, two assists and two steals, senior Hayk Atanasyan contributed two goals, two assists and two steals, and junior Alex Vardanyan scored two goals. Junior Daniel Agazaryan registered two assists, one goal and one steal, senior Arthur Saryan tallied two assists and one goal, and junior Greg Baboudjian was credited with one goal and one assist. Senior Alex Kobalyan and junior Avet Avetisyan each scored one goal, while sophomore Leo Khachaturian had one steal.

The Bulldogs opened the second day of tournament play with a narrow 11-10 loss to Northwood High of Irvine in the semifinal round on Sept. 16 as Agazaryan racked up five goals, two steals and one assist.

Bilbulyan tallied two goals, two steals and one assist, Avetisyan scored two goals, and Saryan chipped in one goal, one steal and one assist. Chalkdzhyan registered six saves and two steals, while Lazaryan produced four saves. Atanasyan contributed two steals and one assist, while sophomore Jack Babelyan finished with one assist and one steal. Freshman Avvo Ilangesyan and Baboudjian each notched one steal, while senior Michael Misakyan was credited with one assist.

Burbank ended tournament pool play with a convincing 17-7 victory over Rancho Cucamonga on Sept. 15.

Chalkdzhyan tallied six saves and one steal, while Lazaryan recorded three saves. Agazaryan produced five assists, three goals and two steals, while Atanasyan finished with three goals, three assists and three steals. Bilbulyan chipped in three goals, two steals and two assists, while Avetisyan contributed three goals, one steal and one assist. Vardanyan scored two goals, Saryan collected two steals and one goal, Baboudjian produced one goal and one steal, and Ilangesyan registered one goal and one assist. Babelyan was credited with two assists and one steal, while Kobalyan had one steal and one assist.

The Bulldogs opened tournament pool play with a 13-7 victory over San Dieguito Academy of Encinitas on Sept. 15.

Mnatsakanyan amassed 11 saves and two steals, while Bilbulyan racked up six goals, three assists and two steals. Atanasyan contributed two goals, two assists and one steal, while Avetisyan scored two goals. Agazaryan recorded three assists, one goal and one steal, Saryan produced two assists and one goal, and Kobalyan collected one goal, one assist and one steal. Chalkdzhyan tallied two steals and one save, Baboudjian had one steal and Ilangesyan was credited with one assist.

Burbank (10-2 overall) will visit Hoover High at Glendale for its Pacific League opener on Sept. 26 at 3:30 p.m. before visiting Glendale on Sept. 28.

BURROUGHS

Burroughs High School’s Atticus Mata recorded 14 saves to help the Bears beat South Pasadena in a nonleague game on Sept. 19.

The Bears posted a 12-6 nonleague victory over visiting South Pasadena on Sept. 19 as Atticus Mata racked up 14 saves.

Harrison Siegel collected five steals, three goals, three assists and one block while Logan Turla contributed four goals, one steal and one assist. Ian Duffield produced two goals, two blocks and one assist, Nicolas Oporta recorded two goals and two steals, and Dean Yuzna finished with two steals, two assists and one goal. Tyler Jones tallied one steal and one assist, while Nicola Nasev had one steal.

JBHS competed in the Chino Hills Tournament last weekend and finished with a 2-2 record after losing to Buena Park on Sept. 16. Individual statistics for the tournament finale were not reported to the Burbank Leader.

The Bears opened the second day of tournament action with a narrow 11-9 loss against Crescenta Valley High of La Crescenta on Sept. 16.

Turla and Oporta each scored three goals, Nasev notched two goals and Duffield had one goal.

Burroughs ended the first day of tournament pool play with a convincing 16-7 victory over Citrus Valley High of Redlands on Sept. 15.

Siegel racked up eight goals, one steal, one assist and one block, while Mata tallied seven saves and three assists. Oporta chipped in two goals and one block, while Nasev finished with two blocks, one goal and one steal. Duffield registered three steals and one goal, Turla contributed two steals and one goal, and Aiden Means and Caleb DuFour each scored one goal.

The Bears edged Walnut 8-7 in its tournament opener on Sept. 15 as Mata produced nine saves and two steals.

Siegel chipped in three goals, one steal, one assist and one block, while Oporta contributed three goals and one steal. Duffield tallied three steals and one goal, Nasev finished with one goal and one steal, and Turla had one steal and one assist.

JBHS lost at Crespi High in Encino 9-4 in a nonleague game on Sept. 14.

Turla scored two goals with one block, Duffield recorded one goal, one assist and one steal, and Oporta had one goal. Mata tallied five saves and three steals, Siegel produced two steals and Nasev finished with one assist.

The Bears (7-8 overall) will open Pacific League play at Arcadia on Sept. 26 at 3:30 p.m. before hosting Pasadena on Sept. 28.
