Baseball: Bears Extend Win Streak to Six Games

The Burroughs High School varsity baseball team extended its season-best win streak to six games after defeating visiting Excelsior Charter High of Victorville 8-3 in a nonleague contest on March 19.

Junior Kenny Montgomery pitched 4 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts, while sophomore Jack Guest pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Senior Nickolas Fritz went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, a run, a stolen base and a walk, senior Willan Armes went 2-for-2 with two runs, an RBI, a stolen base and a walk, and sophomore Devin Whittekiend went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Freshman Elliot Ross registered a hit and an RBI, sophomore Logan Drossin contributed a hit and a run, and senior Chris Perez tallied a base hit. Senior Nate Chapman finished with three stolen bases, two walks and two runs, while sophomore Thomas Martin was credited with an RBI, a run and a walk.

The Bears secured a narrow 5-4 nonleague victory over visiting El Camino Real High of Woodland Hills on March 16.

Senior Elvis Moreno pitched 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and no walks, while Guest pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings with one strikeout. Fritz went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Whittekiend went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Chapman registered a hit, two walks, a run and a stolen base, while Armes tallied a hit and a run. Ross scored twice and walked once, while junior Andrew Cosio was credited with an RBI.

Burroughs picked up a 9-3 victory over visiting Muir High of Pasadena in a Pacific League game on March 15.

Sophomore Ryan Walsh pitched six innings with seven strikeouts, while Guest pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Armes went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, an RBI, a run and a stolen base, Fritz went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, an RBI and a walk, and Chapman went 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases. Senior Dylan Conahan recorded a hit, an RBI and a walk, while senior Brian Martinez tallied a hit and two stolen bases. Drossin stole a pair of bases, walked once and scored a run, while Whittekiend walked twice, scored a pair of runs and stole a base. Cosio walked once and scored a run, while junior Kyle Smith and sophomore Zack Guevara each walked once.

Burroughs (11-2 overall, 5-1 in league) will host Glendale for a league game on March 26 at 3:45 p.m. before visiting the Nitros on March 29.

BURBANK

The Bulldogs lost to visiting Glendale 7-5 in an extra-inning Pacific League game on March 15.

Robert Snyder, who had a hit and an RBI at the plate, pitched 4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts, while co-captain Miklo Reynoso, who had a hit, a run and a walk at the plate, pitched 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Jake Reyes went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Ryan Sebastian registered a double, an RBI and a run. Co-captain Colby Bette finished with a hit, two walks and a run, while Jake Dibie tallied a base hit. Adrian Vasquez walked twice and scored a run, Thomas Angel walked once, and Taylor Pryor scored a run.

Burbank (3-7, 2-3) will host Pasadena for a league game on March 26 at 3:45 p.m. before visiting Pasadena on March 29.
