Softball: Bears Edge Birmingham in Extra Innings

The Burroughs High School varsity softball team overwhelmed host Canyon High in Canyon Country with a 12-1 victory in its Hart Tournament finale on Feb. 24.

Freshman Valentina Reyes, who had a hit, two runs and a walk at the plate, pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing one unearned run on five walks and one hit with four strikeouts. Senior Phoebe Spangler went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, five RBIs and two runs, senior Gizelle Rangsiyawong went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs, and junior Chloe Centeno went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs and an RBI. Senior Skylar Vanole registered a double and two RBIs, sophomore Karlee Earl contributed a hit and two runs, and junior Alyssa Morales recorded a hit and a run. Freshman Sophie Rangsiyawong tallied a base hit, while senior Alyssa Rosales walked once.

The Bears secured a narrow 2-1 victory at Birmingham Charter High School in Lake Balboa in an extra-inning tournament game on Feb. 24. Senior Emerson Coblentz pitched a nine-inning complete game with seven strikeouts while allowing one earned run on six hits and no walks.

Spangler went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a triple, Earl went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Sophie Rangsiyawong went 2-for-4. Centeno finished with a double and a walk, while Vanole recorded a double. Senior Eliza Torres contributed a hit and a walk, Gizelle Rangsiyawong tallied a base hit, and sophomore Karisma Mendez scored a run.

Burroughs defeated visiting La Cañada 4-2 in a nonleague game on Feb. 23. Coblentz pitched three innings of relief with six strikeouts, while Reyes had two strikeouts across four innings.

Spangler went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, Earl went 2-for-3 with a run, and Centeno registered a double, an RBI and a run. Rosales contributed a hit and two RBIs, while Sophie Rangsiyawong tallied a double. Vanole scored once, while Gizelle Rangsiyawong and Morales each walked once.

Burroughs lost at Valencia 4-1 in a nonleague game on Feb. 22.

Coblentz pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts, while Spangler went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, a double and a walk. Sophie Rangsiyawong went 2-for-3, Centeno recorded a double, and Earl, Torres and Vanole each tallied a base hit.

The Bears (6-2 overall) will host Harvard-Westlake High in Studio City for a nonleague game on March 5 at 3:30 p.m. before competing in the Laguna Hills Tournament on March 7.

BURBANK

The Bulldogs lost at Quartz Hill 5-3 in their Hart Tournament finale on Feb. 24. Burbank shut out visiting Highland High of Palmdale 1-0 in a tournament game on Feb. 24. The Bulldogs secured a narrow 2-1 victory over visiting Eagle Rock in a nonleague game on Feb. 23. Individual statistics were not reported to the Leader.

Burbank (4-3) will host Kennedy High of Granada Hills for a nonleague game on March 4 at 3:45 p.m. before hosting Royal High of Simi Valley on March 7.
