Hammel Secures Runner-up Finish at League Tournament

Burbank junior Sena Hammel entered the Pacific League Tournament with hopes of defending her crown.

Hammel and the rest of the Bulldogs girls’ tennis team, along with singles and doubles players from Burroughs High, competed in the two-day event at Burroughs High on Oct. 23 and 25.

BURBANK

Sena Hammel, seeded No. 2, finished as the singles tournament runner-up as Arcadia’s No. 1 player ended the junior’s repeat bid with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the championship match.

She triumphed over Crescenta Valley High of La Crescenta’s No. 3 (6-2, 7-5) and No. 7 (8-4) players, following her victory over teammate Gulim Seitimbetova, seeded No. 15, in the opening round (8-1).

No. 14-seeded Yeva Sarkisian and No. 16-seeded Ariana Khougaeva each suffered defeats in their respective opening rounds — their opponents winning by 8-0 scores.

The No. 7-seeded doubles team of Mira Hammel and Daphne Harbaugh fell in the quarterfinals as Arcadia’s No. 3-seeded pair won by scores of 6-2, 6-4.  

Hammel and Harbaugh managed to upset Crescenta Valley’s No. 2-seeded team with an 8-5 victory in the second round, following their win against the No. 10 Burroughs team in the opening round.

The No. 8-seeded team of Chihiro Kato and Brianna Kobramasihi fell to the top-seeded team from Arcadia, who won their second-round matchup, 8-2. Kato and Kobramasihi defeated the duo from Hoover High of Glendale, the No. 9 team, in their first-round match.

Burbank’s Molly Foenander and Jessica Han, the No. 11 seed, lost to the No. 6 team from Crescenta Vally, 8-2, in their tournament opener.

The CIF Southern Section team playoff brackets will be released on Oct. 20 at 11 a.m.

BURROUGHS

The Bears’ No. 6-seeded Hannah Lewis lost to Crescenta Valley High of La Crescenta’s No. 3-seeded player with a score of 8-4 in the second round, following her victory against Arcadia’s No. 11 player, 8-4, in the opening match. No. 13 Abigail Stell suffered a loss against CV’s No. 4 player, 8-1, in her tournament opener.

The No. 10 doubles team of October Siems and Ashley Sinovai lost their opening match against Burbank’s No. 7 team with a score of 8-1. Similarly, the No. 14 duo of Dana Pitsker and Ava Marye was defeated by Arcadia’s No. 3 team, 8-1, in the initial round.

The CIF Southern Section team playoff brackets will be released on Monday, Oct. 30.
