Siegel Paces Burroughs Past Burbank

The Burroughs High School varsity boys’ water polo team defeated crosstown rival Burbank 10-7 in a Pacific League game on Oct. 18.

Burroughs goalie Atticus Mata racked up 13 saves and one steal, while teammate Harrison Siegel contributed five goals, four steals and one assist. Ian Duffield tallied two goals, two steals, one back and one assist, Logan Turla finished with three steals, one goal and one assist, and Dean Yuzna scored two goals. Aiden Means and Tyler Jones each recorded one steal and one assist, while Nicola Nasev had one block.

Meanwhile for Burbank, junior Daniel Agazaryan tallied two goals, one assist and one steal, senior Andranik Bilbulyan finished with two goals, one steal and one assist, and junior Avet Avetisyan scored two goals. Senior Alec Chalkdzhyan recorded eight saves, two steals and one assist, freshman Avvo Ilangesyan chipped in one goal and one steal, and senior Hayk Atanasyan registered three steals and one assist. Sophomore Leo Khachaturian was credited with one assist, while senior Alex Kobalyan and junior Alex Vardanyan each had one steal.

The Bears (14-13 overall, 6-1 in league) and the Bulldogs (17-10, 5-2) will compete in the Pacific League Tournament at Glendale High School on Tuesday, Oct. 24, and Thursday, Oct. 26. The CIF Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 9 a.m.

BURROUGHS

The Bears secured a 15-10 Pacific League victory over visiting Muir High of Pasadena on Oct. 12.

Siegel racked up five goals, while Turla tallied three goals. Duffield and Nasev each chipped in two goals, while Nicolas Oporta, Yuzna and Jones each scored one goal.

Burroughs competed in the Ocean View Tournament on Oct. 13 and Oct. 14, finishing with a 1-3 record. The Bears defeated Chaparral High of Temecula, 14-10, but suffered losses against Palm Desert, 10-9; Fountain Valley, 8-4; and Santa Monica, 7-5.

BURBANK

The Bulldogs suffered a 12-8 nonleague loss at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Oct. 16, as Agazaryan contributed four goals.

Bilbulyan scored two goals, while sophomore Jack Babelyan and Atanasyan each added one goal.

Burbank won in triple overtime against visiting Chino Hills 18-17 in a nonleague game on Oct. 13, as Bilbulyan racked up seven goals and seven assists.

Junior Christian Lazaryan tallied seven saves and one assist, while Chalkdzhyan recorded three saves. Agazaryan finished with five steals, three goals and one assist, Ilangesyan produced three goals and one steal, and Avetisyan scored three goals. Atanasyan contributed three steals, two goals and one assist, while senior Arthur Saryan chipped in one goal. Babelyan registered two steals and one assist, while Khachaturian had one assist.

The Bulldogs picked up a 10-7 Pacific League victory at Crescenta Valley High in La Crescenta on Oct. 12, as Chalkdzhyan produced eight saves.

Ilangesyan collected three goals, three steals and one assist, Atanasyan tallied two goals, two assists and two steals, and Avetisyan chipped in two goals and two steals. Bilbulyan finished with two steals, one goal and one assist, while Saryan recorded two assists and one goal. Agazaryan registered one goal and one assist, while junior Greg Baboudjian and Kobalyan each had one assist.
