Eli Gault-Crabb of John Burroughs High School (right, pictured with coach John Peebles) won an individual CIF Southern Section Division 1 track and field championship by clearing 16 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault competition.

The Burroughs High School varsity track and field team only had one athlete competing in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 finals at Trabuco Hills High School in Mission Viejo and he made the most of it.

Senior Eli Gault-Crabb capped his high school career as a CIF champion after clearing 16 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault competition last Saturday. The height is significant improvement over his performance in the Pacific League finals and CIF-SS Division 1 prelims where he cleared 14 feet.

Gault-Crabb wasn’t the lone athlete to represent the area. Burbank High School had five athletes who also competed in the Division 1 finals and were led by senior Jayla Flowers, who placed fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 36-11.25.

Junior Emma Cusumano participated in two events, finishing seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (15.40 seconds) and 300 hurdles (48.45).

On the boys’ squad, Jakhi Hayes finished the 110 hurdles in 15.32 for seventh and Jack Sapyta was seventh in the 400 with a time of 50.06. Layne Buck also contributed a seventh-place finish by recording 42-04.25 in the triple jump.
