Burroughs’ Fine Campaign Ends in Bakersfield

Dyani Del Castillo is one of five Burroughs High School seniors who played their final game of the season on Tuesday when the Bears fell to host Bakersfield, 51-30, in the first round of the CIF State Division 3A playoffs.

The Burroughs High School varsity girls’ basketball team’s season came to an end on Tuesday. The Bears received a tough draw in the CIF State Division 3A Southern Regional playoffs and fell to No. 1-seeded Bakersfield, 51-30, in the first round.

Head coach Victoria Oganyan guided Burroughs to 14-10 record in the abbreviated season. The Bears finished second in league with a 6-1 mark and went on an impressive CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoff run, defeating La Habra Whittier Christian, Murrieta Mesa and Downey in the first three rounds. The team fell to San Bernardino Cajon, 67-59, in the semifinals before competing in the state tournament.

The program loses a senior core that includes Faith Boulanger, Dyani Del Castillo, Kayla Wrobel, Lauren Lucas and Sydney Martin.

Chula Vista Eastlake 47

Providence 33

The Pioneers fell to host Eastlake High School of Chula Vista, 47-33, in the first round of the CIF State Division 4AA Southern Regional on Tuesday.

Head coach Kristineh Zadourian guided Providence to a 15-6 record this season and stellar CIF-SS Division 4AA playoff run that ended with a 47-37 loss at Agoura in the semifinals. The squad defeated Santa Barbara San Marcos, Encino Holy Martyrs and Moreno Valley in the first three rounds.

The program will lose Katelyn Alvarado, Katie Karroum and Sophie Nazarian to graduation.
