Police Encourage Drivers to Travel Safely for July Fourth

Burbank police are urging drivers to celebrate safely this Fourth of July, with extra patrols planned from July 1-7 to catch impaired drivers.

In 2022, 487 people died in crashes nationwide during the holiday period, with 40% involving alcohol. California saw 68 fatalities, and the state highway patrol made 1,224 DUI arrests.

“Choosing a sober driver is not just about following the law; it’s about saving lives,” Burbank police said in a statement.

The department reminds residents that impairment can come from alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and marijuana.

Hosts are advised to offer nonalcoholic drinks and monitor guests’ alcohol consumption.

Anyone who sees an impaired or reckless driver is urged to call 911.

The enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
