Baseball: Burroughs Holds Off Arcadia for League Win

The Burroughs High School varsity baseball team extended its win streak to four games with a narrow 6-5 Pacific League victory over visiting Arcadia on April 16.

Junior Kenny Montgomery pitched five innings with four strikeouts, while senior Elvis Moreno pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Senior Nickolas Fritz went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, while senior Brian Martinez produced a hit, a run and a stolen base. Senior Chris Perez registered a hit and an RBI, senior Willan Armes contributed a hit and a run, and senior Dylan Conahan, senior Nate Chapman and freshman Elliot Ross each walked once and scored a run.

The Bears blanked visiting Pasadena 2-0 in a league game on April 12.

Sophomore Ryan Walsh pitched six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, while sophomore Jack Guest pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. Sophomore Devin Whittekiend and Fritz each recorded a hit and an RBI, while Martinez finished with a hit and a run. Chapman walked once and scored a run, while sophomore Logan Drossin walked once.

Burroughs posted a 9-1 victory over visiting Castaic in a nonleague game on April 11.

Whittekiend, who had a double, two runs, an RBI and a walk at the plate, pitched six scoreless innings with five strikeouts, while senior Nate Cisneros pitched two-thirds of an inning. Perez went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, two runs and a walk, while Fritz went 2-for-2 with two walks, a run and a stolen base. Chapman contributed a double, three stolen bases, three runs and a walk, junior Andrew Cosio had a hit and three RBIs, and junior Kyle Smith and sophomore Jack Smith each tallied a hit. Conahan was credited with an RBI and a walk, while Drossin walked once and scored a run.

Burroughs (18-3 overall, 10-1 in league) will visit Simi Valley for a nonleague game on April 20 at 10 a.m. before visiting Burbank on April 23.

BURBANK

Burbank High School’s Thomas Angel went 2-for-3 with a double, six RBIs and four runs to help the Bulldogs beat Hoover High in a Pacific League game on April 12.

The Bulldogs were shut out by visiting Crescenta Valley High 7-0 in a Pacific League game on April 16.

Colby Bette pitched three innings with four strikeouts, while Robert Snyder, who had a base hit at the plate, pitched two innings with one strikeout. Adrian Vasquez pitched a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout, while Taylor Pryor pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Meanwhile, Ryan Sebastian, Jake Reyes and Thomas Angel each added a base hit at the plate.

Burbank routed visiting Hoover High of Glendale 30-0 in a Pacific League game on April 12.

Bette, who had three walks, three RBIs and two runs at the plate, pitched a five-inning complete game with 12 strikeouts, two walks and one hit.

Angel went 2-for-3 with a double, six RBIs, four runs and a stolen base, Sebastian went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs, two runs and a walk, and Snyder went 2-for-4 with four runs, two walks, two stolen bases and an RBI. Michael Bui registered a hit, three runs, two RBIs, two walks and a stolen base, Miklo Reynoso finished with a hit, three runs, three walks and two RBIs, and Jake Dibie recorded a hit, three runs, an RBI and a walk. Bryant Johnson produced a hit, two RBIs, a run and a walk, while Reyes tallied a hit, two runs, a walk and a stolen base. Nathan Zecena was credited with four RBIs, three runs and a walk, while Taylor Pryor had three RBIs and three runs.

The Bulldogs (7-11, 6-5) will host Burroughs High for a league game on April 23 at 6:30 p.m. before visiting the Bears on April 26.
