Baseball: Montgomery Whiffs Seven in Burroughs Win

The Burroughs High School varsity baseball team picked up a 7-3 victory over visiting Crescenta Valley High of La Crescenta in its Pacific League opener on Feb. 28.

Junior Kenny Montgomery pitched 6 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and four walks to earn the win. Sophomore Jack Guest pitched 2/3 inning with one strikeout. Senior Brian Martinez went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs, freshman Elliot Ross went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk, and senior Nate Chapman went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Sophomore Logan Drossin recorded a double, a run and a walk, while senior Nickolas Fritz and junior Kyle Smith each contributed a hit and a run. Senior Chris Perez and sophomore Devin Whittekiend each tallied a base hit, while seniors Willan Armes and Dylan Conahan each walked once and scored a run.

The Bears lost to visiting Monrovia 4-2 in their Dave Moore Tournament finale on Feb. 24.

Conahan finished with a hit and an RBI, while sophomore Jack Smith recorded a base hit. Chapman walked twice and stole a base, while Drossin and Perez each walked once. Martinez scored a run and stole a base, while Fritz scored a run. Senior Elvis Moreno pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Montgomery and Kyle Smith each covered one scoreless inning of relief.

Burroughs secured an 8-3 victory over visiting Village Christian High of Sun Valley in a tournament game on Feb. 24. Individual statistics were not reported to the Burbank Leader.

Burroughs (5-1 overall, 1-0 in league) will visit Hoover High in Glendale for a league game on March 5 at 3 p.m. before hosting the Tornados on March 8.

BURBANK

The Bulldogs lost at Arcadia 11-3 in their Pacific League opener on Feb. 28.

Bryant Johnson registered a double, an RBI and a run, while co-captain Robert Snyder recorded a hit, a run and a walk. Adrian Vasquez finished with a hit and an RBI, while Thomas Angel tallied a base hit. Co-captain Miklo Reynoso walked twice and scored a run, while Ryan Sebastian walked once. Co-captain Colby Bette pitched 4 2/3 innings with two strikeouts, while Taylor Pryor pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Burbank secured a 5-2 victory over visiting St. Genevieve High of Panorama City in a nonleague game on Feb. 24. Individual statistics were not reported to the Leader.

The Bulldogs (1-4, 0-1) will host Muir High of Pasadena for a league game on March 5 at 3:45 p.m. before visiting the Mustangs on March 8.
