Kardosh, Payind Guide Burroughs Past South Pasadena

The Burroughs High School varsity boys’ basketball team secured a narrow 79-78 nonleague victory over visiting South Pasadena on Jan. 2.

Senior captain Chase Kardosh poured in 20 points with six rebounds, three assists and one steal, while senior Omar Payind posted a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Junior captain Jagger Topp registered 14 points, eight assists, two rebounds and one steal, senior Francesco Sabato tallied 10 points, four steals, four rebounds, two assists and one block, and junior Landon Everhart contributed 10 points, four rebounds, two blocks, one steal and one assist. Junior Jacob Samontina recorded eight points, three rebounds and two assists, while sophomore Evan Baker finished with three rebounds, two points, one block, one steal and one assist.

The Bears defeated Santa Paula 73-63 in their Santa Barbara Tournament finale on Dec. 30 as Samontina racked up 27 points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal.

Topp finished with 15 points, eight assists, five steals and two rebounds, while Kardosh recorded 16 points and five rebounds. Landon Everhart tallied seven points, four rebounds and one steal, while sophomore Evan Lanier produced six rebounds and four points. Payind contributed eight rebounds, four assists, two points, one block and one steal, Baker notched four rebounds, two points, one steal and one assist, and senior Arthur Gabrieylan, junior Damian Arredondo and sophomore Giordan Lewis each had one rebound.

Burroughs picked up a 76-62 victory over Righetti High of Santa Maria in a tournament game on Dec. 29.

Topp produced 19 points, six steals, five assists and four rebounds, while Payind posted a double-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and two steals. Landon Everhart contributed 14 points, six rebounds, one block and one assist, while Kardosh finished with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Samontina tallied eight points, four assists, two steals and two rebounds, while junior Elijah Orjuela chipped in five points and one assist. Gabrieylan registered four rebounds, one point and one steal, Baker recorded two points and one rebound, and freshman Owen Everhart had one rebound.

The Bears suffered a 95-76 loss against Chatsworth in a tournament game on Dec. 28, as Kardosh amassed 31 points, two rebounds, two assists and one block.

Samontina tallied 14 points, one steal and one rebound, Topp finished with seven points, five assists, four steals and one rebound, and Landon Everhart registered six points, five rebounds, three blocks, one steal and one assist. Baker contributed five points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, Payind produced four points, four rebounds, two steals and one block, and Lanier chipped in four points and four rebounds. Orjuela recorded three points, one steal, one rebound and one assist, while Owen Everhart scored two points. Gabrieylan had two rebounds, one block and one steal, while Lewis collected two rebounds.

Burroughs (11-6 overall, 2-2 in league) will host Arcadia for a Pacific League game on Jan. 8 at 6:45 p.m. before traveling to Glendale on Jan. 9.

BURBANK

Burbank High School junior Areg Aslanyan recorded 10 points during the Bulldogs’ St. Francis Holiday Hoopfest finale against Blair High on Dec. 29.

The Bulldogs lost to Blair High of Pasadena 96-62 in their St. Francis Holiday Hoopfest finale on Dec. 29 as junior Odartey Blankson amassed 44 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Junior Kamran Alborzian poured in 17 points with five assists and four rebounds, while junior Areg Aslanyan registered 10 points, four rebounds and one steal. Junior Arthur Ambaryan tallied five rebounds, four points, three assists and one steal, while sophomore Cristopher Ong chipped in three points and two rebounds. Junior captain Kevin Dehbashian finished with three assists, two points and two rebounds, while senior Beckett Sandaas contributed two points and one rebound. Junior Rami Khozahi collected two rebounds, while sophomore Anthony Jawiche had one rebound.

Burbank secured a 72-63 victory over Rio Mesa High of Oxnard in a tournament game on Dec. 28, as Alborzian racked up 24 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Blankson poured in 16 points with three rebounds, five assists and one steal, while Khozahi recorded 12 points and two rebounds. Ambaryan finished with six points, two blocks, two rebounds and one assist, Aslanyan tallied five points, one rebound and one assist, and Ong chipped in four points, two assists and one steal. Junior Aren Malekian registered three points, two rebounds and one assist, Jawiche contributed two points and one rebound, and Sandaas had one rebound.

The Bulldogs (5-13, 1-4) will visit Eastside High in Lancaster for a nonleague game on Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. before hosting Muir High of Pasadena on Jan. 9.
