Bears Edge Bulldogs in Rivalry Game, 2-1

The Burroughs High School varsity baseball team edged visiting Burbank, 2-1, in a Pacific League game on Tuesday as Zack Freck tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts, four hits, one earned run and one walk.

Mason Mahay went 2-for-2 with four steals, an RBI and a run for the Bears while teammate Nate Chapman recorded a double and a run. Roberto Castenada had a base hit while Sebastian Zamora walked once.

The Bulldogs were led by Dylan Wierbilis, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI while teammates Bryant Johnson and Ryan Sebastion each had a base hit. Julian Gonzalez walked and scored a run while Jimmy Cafferty stole a base after reaching on a hit-by-pitch.

Pitcher Colby Bette allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts over four innings, Ben Castillo pitched a perfect inning of relief and Danny Edwards pitched two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout.

BURROUGHS

The Bears previously lost a league game to visiting Crescenta Valley High of La Crescenta, 10-2. Individual statistics were not reported to the Burbank Leader by the JBHS coaching staff.

Third-place Burroughs (12-10 overall, 8-5 in league) concluded the regular season at Burbank yesterday; the game ended after the Burbank Leader’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. The CIF-Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Monday, May 1, at 10 a.m.

BURBANK

The Bulldogs stifled previously unbeaten Arcadia, 9-2, in a road game last Friday. Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and a run while Wierbilis went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Cafferty racked up 10 strikeouts over 6.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks. He also went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a walk at the plate. Danny Betancourt went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run while Sebastion went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Adan Depaz recorded a hit and two runs while Johnson tallied a hit and a run. Robert Snyder retired the lone batter he faced on strikes to end the game while Castillo walked once.

The fifth-place Bulldogs (10-9 overall, 6-7 in league) concluded the regular season by hosting Burroughs High yesterday; the game ended after the Burbank Leader’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. The CIF-Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Monday, May 1, at 10 a.m.
