Burbank Fire Department Transitions to Renewable Fuel

First published in the Feb. 4 print issue of the Burbank Leader.

The Burbank Fire Department announced Tuesday its transition from the use of petroleum diesel fuel to renewable diesel fuel.
Renewable Diesel is expected to make a positive impact on the overall health and safety of BFD firefighters, the environment and future operations.
“This was an important step towards cultivating a cleaner and safer level of operation for BFD,” said Fire Chief Eric Garcia. “The reduction of known carcinogens will provide for a safer work environment for our firefighters and cleaner air for the Burbank community.”
Renewable diesel is made from sustainable sources such as animal fats, vegetable oils, greases, plant waste and others. It is compatible with the current use of petroleum diesel, making for a smooth transition between fuel sources and eliminating the waste, BFD officials said. Also, the transition to renewable fuels has significant health benefits including a decreased risk of developing cancer and fewer asthma related cases for those exposed to the exhaust.
“It positively affects the environment because it significantly reduces greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions and produces lower carbon monoxide levels. The high-quality fuel combustion increases the efficiency of engine operations and since the renewable fuel burns cleaner and with less carbon build up, BFD expects to see extended lifetime use of fire engines and engine parts.”
