Burbank Fire Department Receives Class 1 Rating

First published in the Aug. 6 print issue of the Burbank Leader.
The Burbank Fire Department has received one of the highest recognitions possible by earning a Class 1 Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO).
The Class 1 rating by ISO means that the BFD ranks at the top of all fire departments in the United States, ensuring that Burbank residents, business owners and visitors can continue to count on first-class fire protection services.
This rating is one of the factors used to determine fire insurance premiums for homeowners and businesses. Fire insurance premiums are based on the quality of service and fire protection available. This top rating means Burbank property owners could get the lowest premium possible in that area of insurance.
“As a retired Burbank fire captain, I understand the dedication and commitment it takes to earn a Class 1 Public Protection Classification,” said Mayor Jess Talamantes. “City Council and I congratulate and commend Chief [Eric] Garcia and his team for all their hard work in achieving this well-deserved recognition.”
The BFD is one of 411 Class 1 PPC rated departments countrywide. Additionally, the BFD is one of 301 fire departments in the U.S. and Canada that have achieved Accreditation status with the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE), Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI), and one of only 114 departments that have achieved both Class 1 PPC and CFAI Accreditation classifications.
“This is a great accomplishment for the Burbank Fire Department and one that aids residential and commercial community members in securing lower fire insurance premiums due to the department’s suppression and prevention capabilities,” Garcia said.
“I am very proud of the Burbank Fire Department for achieving this status and it’s a true testament to the men and women who provide outstanding service to our community, he added.
ISO is the leading supplier of data and analytics for the property/casualty insurance industry. Most insurers use PPC classifications for underwriting and calculating premiums for residential, commercial and industrial properties.
The PPC program is not intended to analyze all aspects of a comprehensive structural fire suppression delivery system program. It is not for purposes of determining compliance with any state or local law, nor is it for making loss-prevention or life-safety recommendations.
