Mary Anna Hordzwick passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 26, 2022, in Los Angeles, California. She was 98 years old.
The oldest of 3 children, she was born on September 17,1923 in Gardena, California to Joseph and Hertha Baumann. Mary Anna graduated from Antelope Valley High School in 1942. During World War II, she worked at the Polaris Flight Academy, a U.S. Army Air Service school in Lancaster, California, where she met her husband. In the late 1940’s, Mary Anna was employed by the Moss Company, a department store, managing the Glendale, California store.
She was married to Edward Hordzwick on November 23, 1947, at Saint Dominic’s Catholic Church in Eaglerock, California. They were married for 54 years until Edward passed away in 2001.
Mary Anna and Ed’s love of travel took them to almost all the continents by ship, plane, motor coach and train.
She and Ed raised their 4 children in Burbank, California, where she was a longtime resident. She was a member of the Catholic Church and was active in St. Francis Xavier Parish, in Burbank. Mary Anna was a stay-at-home mom until the 1970’s, when she became a real estate agent working for Merrill Lynch among other realtors in Burbank, California.
Mary Anna is survived by her 2 daughters, Carol Nagy of Pine Mountain, California, and Kathy Varlotta of Los Angeles, her daughter-in-law Kristin Hordzwick, 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces and 3 nephews. Besides her husband, Mary Anna was preceded in death by her daughter Diane Hordzwick and son Robert Hordzwick, her sister Josephine Yannoulatos, and brother Albert Baumann.
We want to thank all the staff including caregivers and med-techs at Nazareth House L.A., for taking care of our mom for the last 4 years. Also, we thank Faith and Hope Hospice, Los Angeles, for keeping her comfortable.
There will be a private memorial service for Mary Anna. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary Anna Hordzwick’s name to Nazareth House Los Angeles, 3333 Malcolm Avenue, Los Angeles, California, 90064.
