Burbank Police Investigate Fiery Airport Crash

Police are investigating the cause of a fiery car crash that occurred near the Hollywood Burbank Airport on June 24.

At about 11:10 p.m., Burbank Police Department dispatch received a call for service regarding an injury related to a traffic collision near the intersection of North Clybourn Avenue and Sherman Way.

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority Police Department, Hollywood Burbank Airport Fire Department, and Burbank Fire Department arrived on scene prior to the Burbank police arrival.

“The preliminary investigation revealed a vehicle, occupied by only the driver, was traveling eastbound on Sherman Way when it failed to negotiate a left turn at the intersection of Clybourn Avenue and Sherman Way,” Sgt. Stephen Turner told the Leader.

The vehicle continued eastbound, struck the east curb line, where it collided through a K-rail, a chain-link fence, and ultimately came to rest inside of a parking lot in the 2800 block of Clybourn Avenue, Turner added. The vehicle then caught on fire, however, the driver was able to exit the vehicle.

The man behind the wheel was later transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

BPD officers responded to the scene and took over the investigation. The traffic detective was notified and responded to the scene.

“At this time, it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in this collision. Preliminarily, it appears unsafe speed is likely a contributing factor,” Turner said.
