Frank was born in Webster City, Iowa. Frank passed away after a brief illness at age 83.
Frank moved to California in early 1956 with his parents and settled in Glendale. He went to Hoover High School and became a star athlete in cross-country and track and was an outstanding student.
Following his graduation from Hoover in June of 1957, Frank went to Glendale College, where he continued his athletic and academic career. He was inducted into the Glendale College Athletic Hall of Fame for his athletic achievements.
Frank continued his athletic and educational career at Cal State College of Los Angeles, graduating in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and receiving his teaching credential in 1962. Frank earned a Master of Arts degree in 1965 from California State College of Los Angeles (now California State University Los Angeles).
He began his teaching career with Burbank High School in September of 1962 where he taught and coached for the next 38 years. Frank taught science, health, physical education and coached numerous sports and served as athletic director until retirement in June of 2000.
Frank achieved numerous milestones in his coaching career, including two CIF Championships in boys’ cross-country. Frank also coached numerous teams and athletes to league championships in cross-country, swimming, and track and field.
Frank served as athletic director for Burbank High School from 1974 until retirement in June of 2000. He was inducted into the Burbank High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. He received a Pacific League CIF Lifetime Pass for his many outstanding contributions to athletics and outstanding mentoring of high school athletes and students. In 2019 Burbank High’s athletic field was named Kemp-Kallem Field honoring both Frank and his fellow educator and brother-in-law, Dave Kemp for their combined 85 years of service.
Frank is survived by his wife, Sharon Nelson Kallem, whom he married in 1961. He is also survived by children Lori Kallem Matzner (Michael), Scott Kallem (Celina) and grandchildren Shannon Matzner Ascione (Michael), Scott Kallem (Celina), Shannon Matzner Ascione (Michael), Christopher Matzner (Hayley), and Alyssa Kallem; and great-grandchildren Kadence and Makenzie Ascione, and Grayson Matzner. Son, Mark Kallem, preceded Frank in death in 1981.
