Burbank Wins, Burroughs Loses CIF Openers

The Burbank High School varsity boys’ tennis team edged visiting West Torrance, 70-64, in total games after finishing the CIF-Southern Section Division II first-round match tied in sets won, 9-9.

Bulldogs’ No. 1 singles player Adam Ridaoui (6-0, 6-0, 6-0) and the No. 1 doubles team of Minjae Kim and David Kerimyan (6-3, 6-1, 6-1) each swept. No. 2 Raphael Lazaryev collected a pair of victories, 6-4, 6-0, while the No. 2 duo of Edouard Oganesian and Blake Lewis added a 6-1 victory.

The Bulldogs (13-1 overall) visited JSerra Catholic High in San Juan Capistrano yesterday; the second-round matchup ended after the Burbank Leader’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. If victorious, Burbank would advance to the quarterfinals on Monday, May 8, at meet either Buckley High of Sherman Oaks (16-0) or El Dorado High (19-4).

BURROUGHS

The Bears lost at Tesoro High of Rancho Santa Margarita, 10-8, in their CIF-Southern Section Division III first-round opener on Wednesday.

Burroughs’ No. 1 singles player Bernard Woods (6-0, 6-0) and No. 2 Michael Fraser (6-2, 6-1) each collected a pair of wins while No. 3 Miles Howell (7-6), the No. 1 team of Kaian Bates and Vivek Bhakta (7-5), the No. 2 duo of Sean Konkle and Bevan Maxwell (6-4), and the No. 3 tandem of Paul Vu and Zachary Barry (7-5) each added a victory.

JBHS finished the season fourth in the Pacific League with a 6-6 record (6-8 overall).
