Bulldogs, Bears Compete in Claremont Tournament

The Burbank High School varsity girls’ water polo team lost at South Pasadena, 17-8, in a nonleague game on Tuesday.
Senior Valentina Angle registered three goals and one steal while sophomore Frida Mejia added a pair of goals. Senior Rebecca Zakarian recorded one goal, one steal and one assist, while senior Makala Kelley and sophomore Lizzie Bislamyan each scored once. Senior Elen Amiryan tallied six saves, and sophomore Rose Ilangesyan had two steals.
The Bulldogs competed in the Claremont Tournament last weekend, finishing with a 9-7 victory over Chino on Saturday.
Burbank edged Warren High of Downey, 4-3, to open the second day of tournament play on Saturday, as Amiryan racked up 10 crucial saves. Zakarian finished with two goals and three steals, Lizzie Bislamyan produced one goal and one steal, and Angle scored one goal. Senior Karina Ghukasyan, Mejia and Angle each had two steals, while Kelley posted one assist.
The Bulldogs lost to Flintridge Prep of La Cañada Flintridge, 17-4, for a second time this season to end the first day of tournament play on Friday. Angle registered four steals and one goal, Kelley scored a pair of goals, and Zakarian tallied one goal and two assists. Junior Natalie Bislamyan had one steal and one assist, Amiryan posted three saves and two steals, and freshman Angela Khachikyan had one save and one steal.
Burbank previously opened tournament action by blanking Heritage High of Menifee, 14-0, as Ilangesyan racked up a game-high four goals with two steals and one assist. Angle registered three goals, two steals and one assist, Mejia finished with two goals and four steals, and Kelley tallied two goals, two steals and one assist. Zakarian posted eight steals, one goal and one assist, Natalie Bislamyan had four steals, one goal and one assist, and Ghukasyan recorded one goal, two steals and one assist. Lizzie Bislamyan produced one goal, one steal and one assist, while sophomore Mari Abadzhyan tallied one steal. Amiryan had three saves and one assist, while Khachikyan made a pair of saves.
The Bulldogs (4-4 overall) will compete in the Holiday in the Hills Tournament, which begins Friday, Dec. 16.

BURROUGHS

The Bears opened the regular season by competing in the Claremont Tournament, finishing with a three-game win streak after beating Valley View High of Moreno Valley, 12-9, on Saturday. JBHS picked up a win earlier on Saturday after routing San Dimas, 13-4.
Burroughs won its first game of the season after defeating Corona, 8-6, to end the second day of tournament play on Friday. The Bears previously lost their tournament and season opener against Buena Park, 8-5, earlier on Friday. Individual statistics were not reported to the Burbank Leader.
JBHS (3-1 overall) will host Notre Day High of Sherman Oaks on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 3:45 p.m.
