Bulldogs Win Corona Tournament’s Open Division

The Burbank High School varsity boys’ water polo team routed last year’s CIF-SS Division V champion Carpinteria, 16-7, in a nonleague game on Tuesday. The Bulldogs got their revenge after finishing last year’s CIF postseason as runners-up to Carpinteria.
Senior Zack Gezalyan amassed seven goals, three steals and one assist for Burbank, while senior teammate Arman Hovhanissyan produced five goals three steals and two assists. Sophomore Danny Agazaryan posted three goals, three steals and two assists, while junior Andranik Bilbulyan recorded one goal, three assists and one steal. Senior Narek Abedian and sophomore Christian Lazaryan collected six and five saves, respectively, sophomore Gevorg Choginyan registered five steals and three assists, and junior Hayk Atanasyan had one assist.
Burbank previously won the Corona Tournament Open Division by edging Roosevelt High of Eastvale, 10-8, on Saturday. Gezalyan notched four goals and three steals while Choginyan posted four goals, two steals and one assist. Hovhanissyan collected one goal, three steals and one assist, while Agazaryan recorded one goal and two steals. Sophomore Eric Avetisyan recorded two steals and one assist, Atanasyan finished with three steals, Lazaryan tallied one steal and Abedian had three saves.
The Bulldogs were edged in their tournament opener earlier by Portola High of Irvine, 9-7. Gezalyan registered four goals and three steals, Bilbulyan tallied two goals, one steal and one assist, and Hovhanissyan collected one goal and one steal. Abedian produced eight saves and one steal, Choginyan posted two steals and one assist, Lazaryan had one save and Atanasyan finished with one steal.
Burbank defeated host Pasadena Poly, 17-7, in a nonleague game last Friday. Hovhanissyan amassed eight goals, one steal and one assist, while Bilbulyan collected four goals, two steals and three assists. Atanasyan recorded one goal, two steals and two assists, Gezalyan posted one goal, five steals and two assists, junior Alex Kobalyan produced one goal and two steals, Agazaryan finished with one goal and three assists, and junior Michael Misakyan scored once. Lazaryan notched three saves, two steals and one assist, junior Alec Chalkdzhyan had two saves and one assist and Abedian tallied one save and two steals. Choginyan logged three assists and one steal, Avetisyan registered two steals, and sophomore Jack Babelyan finished with one steal and one assist.
The Bulldogs (4-1 overall) will visit Temple City for a nonleague game on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 3:30 p.m.

BURROUGHS
The Bears (2-2 overall) returned to action by visiting Noter Dame High of Sherman Oaks for a nonleague game; the result was unavailable by the Burbank Leader’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue.
