Bears Win Season Opener, 17-7

The Burroughs High School varsity football team picked up a season-opening victory over visiting Fillmore, 17-7, in a nonleague game last Friday evening.
Junior quarterback Chris Kulikov had a nice opening night, completing 15-of-26 passes for 207 yards with a pair of touchdowns while rushing for 51 yards on 14 carries. Senior Marcus Manahan tallied 17 carries for 64 yards with five tackles on defense, while senior Noah Crues rushed for 21 yards on six carries while adding a team-high 10 tackles on defense.
Junior Ethan Hubbell had three receptions for 101 yards, two of which were touchdowns, with six tackles and four pass deflections on defense, while junior Ryan Hernandez and senior Dilan Webster each made five catches for 48 and 35 yards, respectively.
Junior Noah Frenkel had an 18-yard reception while collecting six tackles on defense, senior Reznor Reeves made a five-yard catch, and junior kicker Brodie Kemp went 2-for-2 in PAT attempts and a 32-yard field goal.
Senior Ricky Garcia tallied six tackles and a sack for a loss of two yards, junior Alex Valenzuela produced four tackles, and senior Brian Noguchi and junior Jayden Mowery each registered three tackles. Senior Collis Lurie, senior Anthony Solis-Torrico, junior Adrian Sanchez and sophomore Rocco Mellilo each had one tackle.
JBHS (1-0 overall) will resume nonleague play at Westchester High in Los Angeles on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.
