The Burroughs High School girls’ varsity softball team was defeated in the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs by St. Anthony High in Long Beach, 4-2, on Tuesday.

The Bears were in control for most of the game, claiming a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning that held strong until St. Anthony scored four crucial runs in the sixth inning and held on to win.

Sophomores Gizelle Rangsiyawong and Phoebe Spangler each posted a pair of base hits and a run scored, while sophomore Alyssa Rosales recorded a base hit and an RBI. Junior Rachel Little tallied a base hit, and sophomore Mia Ramirez produced an RBI.

“This team was incredibly special because there was no selfishness at all – there was no in-fighting, there were no issues. I’ve never really seen a team put their heart and soul into something so much and be so willing to sacrifice themselves as this team did,” JBHS head coach Doug Nicol said.

Burroughs, which reached the CIF-SS Division IV semifinals prior to advancing to the state re-gional tournament, finished the season with a 22- 11-1 overall record.
