Bears Capture Pacific League Championship

The Burroughs High School varsity boys’ volleyball team swept visiting Crescenta Valley High of La Crescenta for a second time this season, 25-18, 25-23, 25-12, on Wednesday to become outright Pacific League champions.

JBHS previously won the Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions at Santa Barbara last weekend.

Burroughs defeated Mira Costa High of Manhattan Beach, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, in the championship match last Saturday after sweeping Corona del Mar High of Newport Beach, 26-24, 25-21, 25-22, earlier that day. The Bears opened tournament play with a four-set victory over San Marcos of Santa Barbara, 15-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-23, last Friday. No individual statistics were reported to the Burbank Leader.

The Bears own a terrific 10-0 record (28-3 overall) and have likely secured a position as one of the top seeds in the upcoming CIF playoffs, with matches scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 26.

The visiting Bulldogs lost to Crescenta Valley High of La Crescenta, 13-25, 12-25, 24-26, in a Pacific League match last Thursday. Ryan Viyar posted two aces, four kills and seven assists, while Austin Kim tallied one ace and three kills. Akash Kodavati collected six digs and one ace, Ian Villaflor had six digs, three kills and four digs, and Kai Cruz finished with one kill and three digs.

The Bulldogs are fifth in the league standings with a 2-7 record (3-11 overall) and will find out in the next few days if they qualified for the postseason.
